A formal gala for presenting statuettes and honorable mentions in 2nd edition of the National Contest "Laurel in the field of innovation" with Stanisław Staszic prize called "Staszice", was held on November 27, 2012. The Institute submitted a project entitled "2nd generation S550W steel of improved mechanical and practical properties as well as corrosion resistance, to be used in production of sections for mining supports' doorframes in coalmines", which was honored with golden laurel of innovation. The subject of invention is steel for doorframes of mining supports, symbol: S550W, the fundamental properties of which are very high strength and improved shock-resistance. Apart from the said properties, the sections are characterized by a set of physico-chemical and tribological properties such as corrosion resistance, as well as proper friction conditions at the meeting point of surfaces, which significantly improved operational parameters of the supports. The product subject to invention was developed under a targeted project realized jointly with Huta Łabędy and Central Mining Institute, cofinanced with budget resources for science. The project was managed by Prof. Dr. Roman Kuziak.
